To get a more in depth view into the condition of a vessel's engines/generators we can take oil samples and have them sent to a lab for analysis. The results are back within 24 hours and are a good indicator of whether or not to bring in the manufacturer's technician for a more specialized engine survey.

The most important part of any survey? Having the vessel hauled out to check the bottom. There can be a lot of hidden problems with the underside of any boat and it takes a trained and experienced surveyor to spot them.
