ZIM and Seaspan take step towards ammonia fueling

Haifa, Israel, headquartered ZIM and containership leasing giant are opening the way for possible future ammonia fueling of five of ten 15,000-TEU LNG-fueled containerships on order at South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries.

At the end of June, the shipyard placed an order with Paris-headquartered GTT for the design of the vessels’ fuel tanks.

The fuel tank of each vessel will have capacity of 12,000 cubic meters and will be fitted with GTT’s Mark III membrane containment system.

“These tanks will include unique features to facilitate a potential conversion of these vessels to ammonia,” says GTT, noting that adapting the Mark III membrane technology for compatibility with ammonia offers Seaspan and ZIM, greater operational flexibility in case of in environmental regulations.

In addition to providing engineering services and on-site technical assistance, GTT says it will support Seaspan through every step of what is its first LNG-fueling project: commissioning of the LNG tank, first LNG bunkering operations, as well as further specific LNG operations and maintenance of the vessels. Additionally, GTT will provide LNG training for the crews, supported by its proprietary G-Sim® training simulator, which replicates the future LNG operations of the vessels. Seaspan will also benefit for the availability of GTT’s HEARSnemergency response service with 24/7 technical assistance.

The vessels will also be fitted with GTT digital platform for monitoring and optimizing their operational performance and their environmental footprint.

Vessels deliveries are scheduled to occur between the third quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024.

Calling this first collaboration between GTT and SHI with ZIM and Seaspan “a major milestone,” Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT, said that the ammonia compatibility of the vessels “offers flexibility and demonstrates GTT’s continued commitment to protect ship-owners investments in a context where they have to constantly adapt to evolving environmental regulations.”

“By working with ZIM, GTT, SHI and DNV on ‘Ammonia Ready’ features, we are taking a long-term view toward futureproofing these vessels,” said Torsten Pedersen, chief operating officer of Seaspan.
